NETCO is pleased to sponsor the 3rd Annual Canadian Conference of Training Directors in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan on August 22, 2010. It is being held preceding the IBEW All Canada Progress Meeting.
This unique professional development and networking opportunity is targeted to IBEW Training Directors/Coordinators and others responsible for administering electrical apprenticeship and journeyperson skills training as part of their job function. It is a Canadian forum for peer-to-peer interaction and sharing of ideas.
Following on the success of the first two conferences the 3rd meeting will direct itself more specifically to important current issues, particularly NETCO’s National Solar Photovoltaic Initiative. The issue of developing sustainable energy alternatives is driving a new Green Industry. This will require standards to be established and training to be developed, ultimately with appropriate accreditation/certification. NETCO is in a position to foster these training requirements and this forum is ideal for sharing training expertise in this area with the goal of establishing a common training curriculum.
The Canadian economy seems to be back on the upswing again. With this will bring the pressure to build the human resource capacity to meet the needs of the industry. Building that capacity through apprenticeship is a key. The Construction Sector Council’s Mentorship Program has been developed to help us do so. A workshop around this program will be part of this year’s agenda.
Another focus will be the presentation of NETCO’s On-line Numeracy Power Assessment as a tool for assessing the numeracy skills of apprentices and journeypersons. Numeracy is one of the three top essential skills required by electricians. So it is important that deficiencies in this skill are identified early so remedial action can be taken to insure future success.
